Digital Travels & Marvels of Nature

Mike MacDonald tells of his love affair with digital photography, nature and travelling the world...

self portrait
Lynda & Mike MacDonald

My Digital Camera is the most recent (1999) extension of the technology world I live and breathe. Graphic presentation has always been my focus.
With the advent of personal computers in the late 70's I authored The Graphics Department one of the top 100 Apple II programs ever written (Nibble 1984).

Those were the days when one person conceived wrote and published a software product at the kitchen table.

Today I have total control of visually representing the world that interests me via my camera and computer. The world I photograph is as a traveler and naturalist and I do this with my 36 year partner in life my wife Lynda.
We are avid Birders and nature lovers and have been able to travel far and wide - China, Africa and most of these great United States.

I just wish that the digital camera revolution had occurred a few years earlier. Our first trip to Africa I took almost 1,000 35mm photos with a Minolta 35 mm and a 35-300mm lens. The second Trip (1999) I also brought along an Olympus C2020. I have 1200 digital pictures from that trip. I have sold my film camera as my Nikon D100 with 3 Sigma lenses that I now use covers all that I need to document our interests. Architecture, Landscapes, Animals and the Macro world are the focus of my work. My one sentence philosophy on picture taking is take as many as you can; shoot close and far; overlap for composite work (even up close) and somewhere in all that will be the "best" photo.

Black and White representation of my work has always been important to me; as removing color allows me to draw attention to form and content. I do not shoot B&W directly as I can "filter" my color photos on the screen. Though I print some of my work most of it is presented on the screen.

Marmot Marmot Marmot
I have been told I overwork the rendering capability of Photoshop; especially by those who are photography traditionalists. I look at the result on the screen or print and decide if it works for me the craftsman not the artist. My favorite "work" is of a marmot from Yellowstone. The color and B&W versions are nice but I am most partial to the Photoshop ink sketch, which I display in my office.

My photography was primarily done for my personal use until participation at photography sites on the internet. What I shoot and how I display it has changed since participation at other photocontest sites and Barebulb Galleries. The critique of fellow photographers and reviewers is an important part of being able to show your work at its best. These sites have helped me produce work that I believe can be shown alongside the professionals.
