A Distinguishing Passion for the Art of Black and White Photography...

A life-long passion that was sparked by an accidental visit to a darkroom... Rhea Malinofsky tells all...

For me, photography has never been about what it is or where it is. I leave that to photojournalists. Black-and-white photography has more to do with form, composition, line, light and shadow. That is what distinguishes it from color photography, which can pass on the merits of wonderful, saturated color alone.

It all began while I was taking a painting class at a local college. During a break, I wandered into the photography lab down the hall, and what I witnessed would forever change the focus of my artistic involvement. In the darkroom, I happened upon the penultimate photographic moment. Someone had slipped a sheet of photographic paper into the developer, and I was there to experience, for the first time ever, the emergence of a black-and-white image. I was transfixed. One could say that this was, for me, a life-defining moment, and to that extent, I have never looked back.

While I have worked with digital photography, it has never equaled the thrill of discovery in the darkroom, nor the comparative quality. The rest, as they say, is history. I learned that I had an "eye." To this day, many years later, I still stop in my tracks when I happen upon that "aha" moment. It could be 40 feet down in a slot canyon in Utah or just walking along a Manhattan street. I know it when I see it, and although I'm certainly not always on the mark more often than I'd care to admit it defines me.

I hope you enjoy viewing my images nearly as much as I did capturing them.
