The Drama of Contrasts...
James Wiley tells of his passion for high contrast Black and White Photography...

My work is more about style than subject matter.
With my fine art work, I take the words black and white quite literally. I carefully seek out subject matter that will produce a dramatic high contrast effect, resulting in a final print of deep, rich blacks and brilliant whites.
I became interested in photography at 16 with the purchase of a $50 Kodak rangefinder camera with shutter speeds, f-stops and everything. I rapidly became fascinated with learning the technology and had never had so much fun with anything. However, it wasn't until I set up a little darkroom and saw that first print come up before my eyes, that I was hooked. It was definitely magic and still is today.
|
My mentor has always been Bill Brandt. His use of black and high contrast imagery has been an important influence in my personal work as well as in my long career as a photojournalist.
|
|
I consider myself very fortunate to have made a living as a photographer. The images I am presenting here, are what I consider to be the very best of my personal work and photojournalism. |

A photojournalist and fine art photographer, James Wiley's accomplishments include the ONPA National Photographer of the Year award (Canada). In 1984, he was selected as one of the top 100 photojournalists in the World to contribute to the book A Day In The Life Of Canada, and in 1987 was invited to contribute to the book Share The Flame (journey of the Olympic flame from Greece to Calgary).
|
In 1988, James was chosen as one of only three photographers to produce the Official Book of the Olympic Games. His work has also appeared in The Best Of Photojournalism, an annual publication featuring the World's best photographs of the year. His own book Images Of Cabbagetown, published in 1994, contrasted the lives of those living in one of Canada's most eclectic neighbourhoods.
The fine art collection consists of fiber based, archivally processed gelatin silver prints, using a traditional darkroom. There has been no computer manipulation of these images.
